Google Classroom
Hi everyone! Thanks for taking a look at Google Classroom today. As you can see, there are a few "quirks" to work out. For now, please continue to do and hand in your assignments the way you've always been handing them in. I'm hopeful that this will all be working smoothly by next week.
Oh, and please note, if you want to keep handing in assignments the way you've always been handing them in (sharing a google doc with me), that's fine too. I'm not going to force you to use Google Classroom.
Thanks

Paper Work based Assignments
So, today I allowed my first student to do his work solely on Paperwork (which they still have to hand in digitally). Before some of you get too excited, please understand that there are exceptions and consequences to every decision (which I will list below). Also, this compromise is temporary.
This year, our whole school (CNMS) has moved to a Correspondence Based learning system. The reason we moved in this direction was due to a major problem with attendance within our High School and Adult Ed programs. In our previous policies, if people missed more than 10 days of class, they were forced to quit (or fail) that class. They then could not continue in their studies until the following semester.
In the Correspondence Based system, attendance is not the main issue. The work is the main issue. So for example, if someone completes 3 lessons in English, and then go get a job somewhere for 2 months, they can easily just come back to school and start work on lesson 4. This opens the doors for students to take charge of their own learning (and pace of learning). Those that want to push ahead can do so with a little bit of hard work. Those who have "life issues" come up no longer will be penalized for missing class (and lose all their work).
So, we began searching for correspondence work to pass on to our students. However, the world of correspondence work is rapidly changing as well. Almost all the post-secondary and high-school institutions out there that offer correspondence work NO LONGER will offer it in a paper based format. It is almost all online....everywhere! We were fortunate to find other institutions old copies of course work that will work for us. We have also started to move this work online as well.
I cannot predict the future at Big Island Lake, but I do know that this technological change is inevitable. It has already happened all around us in the Correspondence Based system. Being able to master this technology will open doors for our students to further not just their high school, but also their post-secondary education.
Now with all that being said, we're also in a transition period. So this year, after spending 2 weeks working on the Online Based system, if an adult student is STILL determined to work solely with paperwork, they will be allowed to do so (as long as they hand it in in a digital format, which is easy to learn). Also, anyone who is determined to do everything by paperwork will not qualify for the Adult 30 PAA Computers class. They will have to complete another class instead (this option is limited to either Economics 30 or Entrepreneurship 30).
Although some people might not be interested in it, technology in education is here to stay - and to grow. I encourage everyone to embrace this change sooner rather than later, but I understand if some people would like to 'take some extra time' in embracing this as well.
Feel free to come talk to me about this further if you'd like, and feel free to come join our Adult Ed class at any time during the year. You don't have to wait for "next semester", you can do it now!
I look forward to hearing from many of you!

Hello Everyone!
Plans for today include starting work on your personal budget. I will be using THIS TEMPLATE which I would like each of you to complete. Please remember to convert all amounts to a Bi-Weekly amount.
(So, if you get paid monthly, you have to figure out how to convert this to Bi-Weekly. And NO, this does not mean you get to just divide your monthly amount by 2! You will need to apply the skills you learned with Cross-Multiply and Divide because there are 12 months, but 26 bi-weekly payments, not 24 - I will teach this in class)
If we have time, we will also watch episode 3 of 8th Fire.
Have Fun

Thursday Sept 25th
Today we will start with a review of all the computer stuff we've been learning and an introduction to Google Classroom. We at CNMS are in the process of moving the whole school towards the type and style of learning that we've already been doing for the last few weeks in Adult Ed. This should make our lives even a little bit more easier than it already is in terms of handing assignments in.

Chem 20 Khan Academy - Wed Sept 24
Hi everyone - I have added all of you to a new Khan Academy class called "Chem 20". There are no "challenges" in this class, but there is access to ALL the videos in regards to your science class. So, if you don't understand the Chemistry topic, watch these vids!
Thanks

Today we're going to do a little math lesson on RATIOS. Basically, we're going to learn to cross multiply and divide.
Ratios are used with fractions, and also in Geography (maps). We're going to learn how to juggle these numbers together. Can you name some other places where ratios could be used?
I will post the lesson video below when it is complete (here it is)
Please continue to do your assignments and hand them in (share a google doc).

Monday
I hope you had a good weekend!
Today we're going to delve further into digitizing your work. Often, we need to take 'side notes' or draw pictures or simply 'copy' something. Whatever you do, you need to create a link within the document you are sharing with me that will bring me to your image (either a jpeg or pdf).
We can do this a few different ways:
1) Flickr/Picasa
2) Google Drive (or iCloud Drive/OneNote/Dropbox)
3) Scanner/Printer
4) Photocopier - email and upload a pdf
We'll also review how to do this in the context of a Google Document. Please note - over the next few days you might see some slight changes to your Google Drive account. That's because CNMS is in the process of getting their own Website through Google. Hopefully soon you will see folders in your google drive that have your files in them that are already setup to be shared with me. That way, you don't have to keep "sharing" your documents with me as I'll already have access to your folder. It's not that big of a change really, and you might not even notice it. If you have any questions, come talk to me. Thanks!
Otherwise, please continue to do your assignments.
As of today, the Scanner is setup in the computer lab for you to scan papers in pdf format onto the laptop connected to the scanner. From here you can move that image into your Google Drive account. Please then create a link between your newly uploaded image and the Google Doc you are sharing with me. If you'd like some help using the scanner, please feel free to ask. Eventually I'll post a video about it too.
Thanks!

Prior Learning 30 OR Entrepreneurship 30
Hello and happy Friday! (sept 19/2014) At 11:15am we will be watching the second video in our 8th Fire series titled "It's Time".
I've slightly changed the links on the right hand side of the screen. Now, there is only one link for each subject.
ELA 30A has changed in that you are required to read the Play and the Novel. Please click on the link and read "The life of Pi" and "Rez Sisters".
The Math link has also changed. Now, you have access to the one folder that opens either the Workbook, the Textbook, or the relevant Khan Academy videos for Math 20.
There are also 3 new links - BUT YOU ONLY HAVE TO DO 2 OF THEM. One of them is ELA B30 (the Departmental will not be written until June 2015). This is not optional. As for the other two, you have the choice to either take Prior Learning 30 or Entrepreneurship 30.
Prior Learning 30 is for adult's who have worked somewhere continuously for at least 6 months and can get their former employer to fill out the form needed to receive the credit (this credit is similar to a Work Experience credit). If you are not able to obtain a Prior Learning 30 credit, you will need to take Entrepreneurship 30.
Please use today to work at your classes and explore the new one's once they are posted. Please continue to hand in your work by sharing a Google document with me.
On that note - if you'd like, you can use the same Google Doc for all the assignments within one class. Once you share the document with me, even if you change it, I will be able to see all the changes. You don't have to keep re-sharing it with me all the time. I will explain in class what I mean by that.
Thanks!
Have a Great Weekend!

Thursday Sept 18 - 2014
Hi again everyone!
So, today is pretty much a "catch up" day.
That means, I am hoping you will spend the day primarily working on your courses to graduate from Adult 12. Specifically,
1) ELA 30A
2) Chem 20
3) Native Studies 30
4) Math 20
For each of these courses, read the Text first, then do the Assignments (work). Please record your assignments into a Google Doc within your Google Drive account. Then, please share that document with me (robertkennethpet@gmail.com).
Thanks!

Good Morning everyone!
So - today we're going to start learning about:
1) Reminder to hand in assignments via Google Docs
It's time to start working away from Khan Academy, and more toward the other classes. So far only around 5 students have handed assignments in. Most people are working on Khan Academy (which is good, but we need to do both now).
2) Skype - please download onto your computer/tablet/cell/smart tv
3) Creating a Twitter account - please take a look at my Twitter account (@RobKroeker) and add the First Nations Activists that you think are the best. Create a Twitter account and follow @RobKroeker. From here, look at who I am following, and add whoever you'd like.
4) We're going to look at the different platforms for online learning:
Moodle
Nexus

Tuesday - Study Helps and add on's for Google
Good News Everyone! We have access to 5 more laptops! Also, because these laptops are Wi-Fi based, we can use them to use the Wi-Fi from the school (rather than from in here). This should make everyone's internet experience a little bit better.
Also, today we are scheduled to receive our own individual Modem, so we no longer will have to share with the Education offices.
Today we're going to start looking at all the great add-on's that Google has to offer =)
Google Docs
Google Drive
We will also continue with Native Studies.
Finally, we will start looking at some music training (optional).

Embedding a video Lesson - and uploading to Youtube
Below is a video giving instruction on how to upload a video to youtube from your computer, and how to embed that video into a blog. Enjoy
Monday
We began watching Canada: A People's History up to the episode titled War. Please Click Here if you need to watch it.
Here is the Link to watch the video about Fractions, but if you don't want to click on the link, then just watch below! - I've embedded the movie twice because of the teaching I included in the Embed a Video post that is above this one. Thanks!

Thurs - Sept 11
Great work today everyone! Everyone spent all day doing class work. It was a pleasure to be here to help out where I could =)
Tomorrow, we will do a few more lessons:
1) We will study how to fill out an application for a loan/mortgage (Math 11 - unit 6)
Primarily we will learn about ASSETS and LIABILITIES
This relates to positive and negative numbers in Khan Academy and to our Workplace math 11
Looking at these documents will be done in a few formats:

Looking at these documents will be done in a few formats:
pdfzen
photo/scan/photocopy - print to pdf
pen and paper *in this case, the content of learning about assets and liabilities is more important than the technology. As such, we will look at the pen and paper method as well - combined with using a cell phone camera to convert a document into a .pdf which is the industry and government standard. Having a strong mastery of technology allows people to move faster towards their goals.
2) We will watch 8th Fire (afternoon class will use that time for work catch-up)
3) We will all sign up for Twitter and follow significant First Nations leaders from across Canada
I'm looking forward to seeing many of you - for those of you who are doing this at home, please remember to fill out the attendance sheet, and please take the time to look at the information above online (you can search for a Consumer Information form or Mortgage Assets/Liabilities form on Google).

HI Everyone!
So - everyone should be able to get started on at least one of their classes by now =) If not, please come talk to me personally so we can get you going.
Today we reviewed everything from day 1 on. Most of the people were in the computer lab doing work on their own. At this point, you could be anywhere with an internet connection to do this course.
We will now start moving towards TRACK 2 and 3 work - Basic Math (Khan Academy), Basic English, Phys Ed, Music, Bible, Trades and whatever specific thing that people want to learn.

Hello =)
Today we are going to learn about Blogger. Every student is going to create their own first blog in order to fulfill the requirements of our P.A.A. 30 class - ICT Computers.
Secondly, we are going to start talking about Twitter and specifically the uses it has in regards to Native Studies 30.
Also, some of you might be wondering how I can type so fast? Can any of you type this fast?

Sept 5
We're on our way!
So - by now everyone in the Adult 12 Track should be able to:
1) Access their class (Lesson-Assignment)
2) Create a Google Document (shared)
Khan Academy - at this point (8:40am) I am coaching 7 people, while an additional 37 people have not yet responded to my request via email.
This could mean your invitation is in a "SPAM" folder? or perhaps in the "Promotions" folder? Let's work together to figure this out today.
Attendance - Online Login Link
Today, I'm going to create an attendance sheet. When you go to the Blog, before you start working on a class, please print your name under the day listed. The Link will be located in the Top Right Hand of the Blog page. In the future we'll get a better system, but for now this will work. Let's work together to figure this out.

- Creating a Link
- Adding your link to the Spreadsheet (or any document)
Native Studies 30 - Creating a document and sharing it with me.

I encourage you to spend time on Khan Academy to hone your skills for this course. It is expected that everyone will spend time in BOTH formats in order to determine a mark.
Please Note - For each workbook assignment, complete HALF of the questions (you don't have to do them all). You get to choose which ones you do! =)
The Link for Math Works 11 is located on this Blog. First, read through the chapter. If you don't understand something, search for help on Khan Academy. If you still can't find an answer, ask me or email someone you think could help you! Remember, it's YOUR education =)

Tonight's work
Hi everyone =)
So, tonight I created an online spreadsheet and invited you to fill in the blank via a link I sent you by email. Please keep in mind that this is a good example of Collaborative Learning which we will discuss more in our ICT class.
Also, I invited you to join my classroom within Khan Academy as well. Finally, I uploaded the material for Chemistry 20 as well.
Tomorrow (the 4th) we will review how to hand in assignments via Google Docs on your Google Drive account. You will learn how to share documents and begin using some of the training I'm giving you. I will then add more links to the BLOG and you will be able to start on your courses from anywhere with internet access.
I've been receiving good questions from all of you and I hope I can meet all your questions and concerns. Thank you for your continued patience as we go on this journey together!

Community Standards:
This environment is one that will be conducive to learning. Be respectful of this building, each other, and myself. Come here when you're ready, willing, and able to learn. Anyone or thing that gets in the way of this being a healthy learning space will be asked to leave.
As a class, we will discuss the details of what this respect means as the situations arise. If you're still unsure, please talk to me personally.
I look forward to a great year helping you achieve the goals you have set out! Thank You!
